Kassa Soro

There is a plethora of rhythms that belong to the Malinké Kassa family of rhythms (from North East Guinea). All are played at various times during agricultural activities - especially to inspire and motivate work; and particularly when it is labour intensive, or time to return to work.

Kassa means “till the land“ and Soro is a benevolent spirit.

Kassa Soro is played in the morning - to start the working day. In the Kouroussa prefecture of Guinea the rhythm is known as the principal Kassa rhythm, in Sankaran region it is known as Kassa Ba - the ‘Great Kassa’.
